Emerald Hollow Mine is the only public emerald mine in the world open for prospecting. Located in Hiddenite, North Carolina, in the Brushy Mountains' foothills, it is one of North America's most unique geological sites. More than 60 types of gemstones and minerals can be found here, including rare emeralds, aquamarine, sapphire, garnet, topaz, amethyst, citrine, rutile, and tourmaline. The area is also known for world-class smoky and clear quartz crystals and is one of the few places where the rare gemstone Hiddenite is found. Open daily from 8:30 a.m. to sunset, with hours varying seasonally. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
