In 1954, the museum’s Founding Director Paul Whitener was presented with a great opportunity. A wealthy and well-connected art collector named George Zabriskie had passed away. From great art to lavish food and drink, Zabriskie was a man known for having a taste for the finer things in life. Undoubtedly, the NYC sale of Zabriskie’s collection of paintings could provide HMA with examples from some of America’s most treasured artists…but, Paul faced a few key obstacles that stood between him and this bounty.
Cocktails with the Collection will tell the story of the challenges Paul Whitener overcame to bring back paintings from the Zabriskie Auction that comprise highlights of the permanent collection. Spend a few evenings sipping selections from The Bon Vivant’s Companion, Zabriskie’s own publication of his favorite drink recipes, while learning more about the paintings he once lived with.
Upon registration you will receive the first list of ingredients for each cocktail, as well as a Zoom link for Session 2 of Cocktails with the Collection: A Virtual Series.
